Ski Ability NI began over 30 years ago when our Head Coach, Jill Coulter-Sloan MBE, introduced adaptive skiing to Northern Ireland. At the time, no inclusive snowsports opportunities existed here — no sit-skis, no equipment, and no pathway for disabled athletes. Jill changed that.
Starting with amputee skiers and the very first sit-ski on our slope in Lurgan, she opened a door that had never existed before. Not long after, Jane joined Jill as a coach, bringing her warmth, skill and dedication. Together, Jill and Jane laid the foundations of a club built on belief, dignity and inclusion.
From those early days — a single sit-ski, a handful of determined athletes and two passionate coaches — Ski Ability NI began to grow. Parents told other parents, new coaches joined the team, and athletes of all ages found a place where they were welcomed, supported and celebrated.
As the club evolved, so did our opportunities. Becoming affiliated with Special Olympics Ulster, Special Olympics Ireland and Snowsport England marked a major step forward in our development. These partnerships strengthened our coaching standards, enhanced our safeguarding framework, and opened doors for our athletes to explore new pathways — from skill-building and personal development to regional, national and world-level competitions for those who are eligible.
These affiliations represent our commitment to giving athletes the very best support, structure and opportunities we can provide.
Today, Ski Ability NI proudly supports athletes of all ages with a wide range of needs, abilities and strengths. Every week, our slope comes alive with courage, laughter and determination as athletes discover what they can do — often surprising even themselves.
What has remained unchanged from the beginning is our heart:
a belief that every person deserves the chance to discover their potential,
a commitment to inclusion and dignity,
and a community built on warmth, encouragement and belonging.
From one sit-ski and two dedicated coaches to a thriving club serving families across Northern Ireland, our story is one of courage, innovation and community — and we are proud to continue that journey.
Whether standing or sitting, everyone can ski. Our programs are customized to meet each athlete’s needs, ensuring everyone can enjoy the sport.
Led by our dedicated Head Coach, who brought adaptive skiing to Northern Ireland, our coaching team is skilled, passionate, and committed to helping each athlete reach their full potential
We proudly support athletes in competing in Special Olympics events. With success on both regional and world stages, our athletes continue to inspire us all
Skiing is more than a sport—it’s a transformative experience that builds self-esteem, fosters independence, and creates lifelong memories.
We aim to train 2-4 new volunteers as instructors each year, expanding our support team. Our existing instructors and volunteers also receive refresher training regularly, with opportunities to progress to the next level in their instructional skills, ensuring the highest standard of care and expertise for our athletes.
Regular participation in skiing offers athletes the opportunity to stay active and improve their physical fitness, all while having fun and forming lasting bonds with their peers. The benefits extend beyond the slopes, helping individuals lead healthier, more active lifestyles.
